Estonian third in a unique European poker tournament
Posted on 08.12.2004Olympic Poker Club organized a unique poker tournament in Europe from November 18 to December 5 called the Anniversary Tour 2004, where Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian capitals held three poker competitions that formed a whole. The tournament that takes place for the second year in a row was won by the Latvian, Eduards Rakuss, from more than 400 competitors.
The second place was won by Eduards' compatriot Aleksandrs Karlins who lost to the winning score of 747 by just 12 points. The best Estonian at the Anniversary Tour was the third-placed Aleksandr Klepatš with 572 points. “The Latvians also took the first two places in the last year's tournament and then Estonians were also left third,” commented Olympic Casino's poker manager Martti Aru.
According to Martti Aru, the organizers were pleasantly surprised by the poker fans' active participation in the tournament in all of the Baltic States. “There were more than two and a half times more players than last year. In addition to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, players also came from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark,” said Aru. The tournament's prize fund was also at a record high of 1 322 000 kroons.
Fees for the participation ranged from 15 to 640 euros. This also made the prizes respectable: the winner of the most expensive tournament received almost 100 000 kroons of prize money. The best player of each stage has been invited to participate in the famous Freezeout tournament held in Helsinki from 10-12 December with lodging and tickets to the European Poker Awards show. The first stage in Vilnius was won by the Swede, Johannes Sundberg, the second stage in Riga by the Lithuanian, Antanas Bakaitis, and the third stage in Tallinn by the Swede, Vesa Linjamaa.
