The Estonian team won the first place at the final of The Baltic Sea Blackjack Tournament, the Blackjack championships for the Baltic Sea countries, held on October 30 at the Grand Casino in Helsinki, Finland. Estonians also won the individual first prize, the best Blackjack player's title was claimed by Kristjan who won a total of almost 313 000 kroons of prize money. Altogether, Estonians in various final positions won 602 400 kroons.
“The start of the tournament was difficult, because I ended the first round with zero points,” commented the new champion Kristjan. Later in the second round, Kristjan's more aggressive game play helped him gather an amazing 13 500 points which gave him the seventh place after two rounds. “In the semi-final, I became the tournament favorite and managed to hold onto my lead until the final tournament,” said Kristjan.

In the team standings our southern neighbors, the Latvians, won the second place with the Lithuanians coming in on third place at the international Blackjack tournament held already for the fifth time. The Estonian team was successful in defending its last year's title against the Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Swedish and Polish teams.

Olympic Casino's marketing director Marje Braunbrück says the final was truly intense and exciting. “Even after the 18th draw, the first three places were held by Estonians, but after the 20th draw, the Lithuanian player moved into the second place and the Latvian player into the third place,” Braunbrück reported about the final. After the last draw, Estonia still retained the first place, Latvia and Lithuania took the second and third place, respectively. “This year, Estonians were leaps and bounds ahead of the others. Out the seven finalists from the original 42 participants, four were Estonian compared to the two Latvians and a Lithuanian.”

The Estonian team was made up of seven top local Blackjack players who were selected as a result of the Estonian Championships that ended on October 16. A total of over 200 Blackjack players tried their skill in the Estonian preliminaries. According to Marje Braunbrück, the large number of participants shows the continued interest in classical casino games. “Next year we plan to extend the tournament scope even further. Russia, who skipped this year's tournament, has promised to rejoin us. Sweden, who debuted in this year's tournament, will also continue to participate,” remarked Braunbrück.

The Estonian team has won The Baltic Sea Blackjack Tournament twice: last year in Riga and in 2001 at the finals held in Warsaw. In individual standings, Warsaw also saw the first two places go to Estonia.
